On September 4, the unique cargo operation on the discharge of 17 bells of St. Daniil’s Monastery was conducted on berth 101 of the group JSC “Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg”. The weight of the two biggest bells was 12 and 6 tons.
The bells’ way to the marine capital of Russia started at the shores of the USA from where they were brought to Germany by an ocean liner, then under vigilant control of the experts the bells were placed on board the ferry “Finland” and shipped to Saint-Petersburg.
Reference notes:
Belfry of St.Daniil’s Monastery founded in the 13th century by the prince Daniil Moscowskiy was the most famous belfry in Moscow after Kremlevskaya belfry tower. In 1930 the Soviets closed the monastery, its rector and monks were shot and the property confiscated.
The bells of the monastery were to be melted, but luckily they were bought by the American industrialist Charles Crain. The Soviet government sold the bells at the price of the bronze they were made of. From 1931 the bells tolled to announce different events of Harvard University.
In the experts’ opinion, the belfry of St.Daniil’s monastery is the best among the remaining ones in terms of sound quality. The oldest of the bells was given to the monastery by the tsar Fedor Ioanovich in the 16th century.
Now the bells have come home, and in Harvard remained their exact replicas founded at Voronezh factory “Vera”.
